Pigs fed a GMO diet exhibited health problems more than pigs fed a comparable non-GMO diet

pigs-fed-gmo-diet150w Organic Slant) Pigs fed a diet of GM corn and soy experienced numerous adverse health effects, including sever stomach inflammation and an enlarged uterus according to a new peer-reviewed long-term feeding study.

Published in the Organic Systems Journal, the peer-reviewed study analyzed 168 just-weaned commercial pigs for 22.7 weeks, or just over 5 months. Half of the pigs were fed popular GM corn and soy varieties, while the other half were fed the same foods, only not GM.

Of the GM crops planted in the USA, herbicide-tolerant GM soy has been widely adopted and now constitutes 94% of the soy planted in the USA (USDA, 2011). GM corn varieties have also been widely adopted in the USA.

The five-month study combined “real on-farm conditions” with “strict scientific controls,” according to lead researcher Judy Carman of Flinders University in Australia.

Using pigs was important not only because “we eat them,” but because humans and pigs share similar digestive systems, Carman said in a statement.

“We need to investigate if people are also getting digestive problems from eating GM crops,” the statement said.

There have been a number of reviews of the published literature on the safety of GM crops. Many of the feeding studies reviewed used non-mammals (e.g. birds, fish) or animals were fed the crop in a form that humans do not eat (e.g. silage) or only animal production outcomes were measured such as body weight, carcass weight, breast meat yield or milk production, which may not be indicative of potential human health outcomes. Only a small proportion of published animal feeding studies have been longer-term toxicological studies where a GM crop was fed to animals that are physiologically comparable to humans, and organs, blood and tissue samples were taken from the animals and examined to assess if the crop caused any adverse effects.

In pigs eating genetically modified crops, the average rate of severe stomach inflammation was nearly three times as high as that for other pigs (32 percent vs. 12 percent).  Among male pigs eating a GM diet, the rate of severe stomach inflammation was four times higher.

“We found that the level of severe inflammation in stomachs was markedly higher in pigs fed the GM diet. Pigs on the GM diet were 2.6 times more likely to get severe stomach inflammation than control pigs. Males were more strongly affected. While female pigs were 2.2 times more likely to get severe stomach inflammation when on the GM diet, males were 4 times more likely. These findings are both biologically significant and statistically significant.”

“The results indicate that it would be prudent for GM crops that are destined for human food and animal feed … to undergo long-term animal feeding studies preferably before commercial planting, particularly for toxicological and reproductive effects,” concluded Carman and her colleagues, who include Iowa-based farmer as well as crop and livestock advisor Howard Vlieger.

“Our results provide clear evidence that regulators need to safety assess GM crops containing mixtures of GM genes, regardless of whether those genes occur in the one GM plant or in a mixture of GM plants eaten in the same meal, even if regulators have already assessed GM plants containing single GM genes in the mixture…In my experience, farmers have found increased production costs and escalating antibiotic use when feeding GM crops. In some operations, the livestock death loss is high, and there are unexplained problems including spontaneous abortions, deformities of new-born animals, and an overall listlessness and lack of contentment in the animals,”  Dr. Carman said.

This study raises serious questions about the long-term health impacts of genetically engineered foods.

Similar Inflammation has been found in humans with Inflammable Bowl Diseases; Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease are increasing with increased GMO production.
